Research Using Hamnet
http://shakespeare.folger.edu
Unfortunately, the Folger's collection is vast and our cataloging staff is small. As a result, all of our holdings are not in Hamnet, and some holdings are have not been cataloged at all. Please see the reading room staff or the scholars for help with using the card catalog.

What's in Hamnet?

  • Records for all modern books (post 1830)
  • Records for most of the early English books (1475-1700)
  • Records for individually cataloged plays (NOT sets--e.g., the Folger editions of the plays)
  • SOME of the early European books
  • SOME of the artwork and museum objects
  • SOME of the manuscript collections (also see our online Finding Aids)

Basic Searching

Searching by subject/form/genre is the best way to get started. This search will bring up a list of headings related to the topic of marriage.

Clicking on the first heading will bring up both modern and early works. For early works only, click on headings that specify "Early works to 1800." The image below shows the first four items under the heading, "Marriage." You may choose to sort records by title, author or date.

Each item's location, call number and status appears on the list. Clicking on a title will bring up the more detailed record for that item.

This particular item is in the modern stacks on Deck B, which are open to readers. To charge an item, bring it to the reference desk with your reader's card. Once an item is charged to you, you may store it on your shelf in the reading room for the duration of your research. The Folger is not a lending library, so even modern materials must be used in the reading room. If another reader requests an item you are not currently using, staff may borrow it from your shelf and return it when the other reader is finished. It will still be charged to you, and should you need it, staff will retrieve it from the other reader. Rare items will be retrieved from the vaults by reference staff and stored behind the reference desk when not in use. Please be aware that certain rare items require special permission to be called up from the vaults and you may be asked to use digital images from Luna or microfilm instead (e.g., copies of the First Folio).

For your convenience, you may save or email records. If you have a laptop or tablet computer, you may want to bring it with you into the stacks. Wireless access is available on Decks A and B.

Advanced Search

The advanced search tab offers many more options. If you were looking for books on marriage that include illustrations, for example, you could try searching "marriage" as a subject and "ill" as physical description.
Screen_shot_2011-10-25_at_10.27.58_PM.png
This only returns records that contain illustrations.

There are many other combinations by which you can search for materials. If you are looking for something very specific, please see the reference staff for assistance.
