Our photography department is hard at work digitizing as much of our collection as possible. While there is a still a LONG way to go, our digital image collection through Luna already contains close to 50,000 images. Our staff and interns are also working to link Luna images directly to the records in Hamnet. If you are lucky enough to come across linked records, your work is done. It's likely, however, that you will have to do some searching or browsing to find images relevant to your research project. There are many ways to find images in Luna, but two of them are most likely to be useful: call numbers and keywords.
Keyword Searching
Typing a keyword into the basic search box will bring up all of the images associated with that image. Our images are not yet fully cataloged, so keywords may or may not be successful. It depends on what terms the photography staff chose to add to an image.
This search brings up over results, including texts and images.
You can narrow your results in several ways using the menu on the left side of the screen.
Each image is zoomable and downloadable, and you can even share links.
Call Number Searching
You may wish to try to find an image of one or several of the primary sources you are using in your project. The best way to see if there are any related images in Luna is to search for the call number. Choose "Call Number (PDI)" instead of "Call Number (Hamnet)." This will bring up the images by the numbers assigned by the digital imaging department. Hamnet call numbers, though identical, have to be attached to the images separately, and this has not been completed yet. Strange, but true.
This search brings up all of the images associated with a particular manuscript collection. Some collections, like the Booth collection in this example, have not been fully digitized. Others, like the Cavendish-Talbot Family Papers, have been completely digitized. Staff and interns are working to link images from Luna directly to our Finding Aids.
